Fire Destroys Barn & Log Home

A fire in a burn barrel is being blamed for a structure fire Tuesday afternoon in Portage Township.

The fire began shortly around 4:10pm at Sheridan Place on US-41.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says the fire originated in a burn barrel then ignited a nearby wooden fence, which then spread to a storage shed and to a neighboring log home.

No one is believed to have been inside the log home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

The public is reminded to check with the Michigan DNR’s Burn Permits Management System website (https://www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits/) prior to burning any debris.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by MTU Public Safety, Houghton City Police Department, and MSP Calumet Post.

The Hurontown Fire and Rescue was assisted by Houghton Fire Department, Hancock Fire Department, Chassell Fire Department, and Stanton Township Fire Department’s R.I.T. Team, Mercy EMS, and the Red Cross Disaster Services.

The US Coast Guard responded to establish a safety zone in the canal and standby for medical transport if needed.
