The leading authority on Finnish log construction in North America will be in Hancock to share his expertise.
Frank Eld, the Idaho resident of “Finnebago” fame and Finlandia Foundation National Lecturer of the Year, will give a lecture and demonstration on “Finnish Log Construction: The Art” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26 at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center. Some local Finnish-Americans might recall Eld’s visit during the 2017 Juhannus celebration in the Copper Country, during which he gave a presentation and also furthered his research into Finnish log construction across North America.
Eld’s mission is to educate and encourage the preservation of these buildings, which are tangible symbols of Finnish culture. Traveling in his “Finnebago,” a pick-up truck outfitted with a log cabin in back, Frank scours the countryside across the U.S. and Canada, documenting structures to be featured in his second book on the subject.
This visit is sponsored by the City of Hancock’s Finnish Theme Committee, which is a chapter of Finlandia Foundation National. The presentation is free and open to the public.
