Finnish Independence Day Celebration Planned

A celebration is planned this week to commemorate the 107th anniversary of Finnish independence.

After having been controlled by Russia for most of the 19th century, Finns took advantage of the confusion of World War One to create their own state in 1917.

Disputes with Russia continued for decades, however, and local Honorary Finnish Consul Jim Kurtti says that history has left a bad taste in the mouths of Finlanders…

There’s a, sort of an off-color comment about them that “A Russian is a Russian even if you fry him in butter.” Anytime Russia starts to annoy Finland, or to terrorize them, they remember this old comment.

Kurtti notes the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine has made a lot of Finns nervous…

One of the arguments that Putin is making is that Ukraine is really part of Russia. He also thinks that Finland was part of Russia.

Kurtti says Finns are supporting the people of Ukraine.

The Finnish Independence Day celebration is set for Thursday at 5:30 at the Finnish American Heritage Center, and will include music and dancing. All are welcome.
