Finlandia Commencement Ceremony Sunday

Finlandia University will hold their commencement ceremony on Sunday at the Paavo Nurmi Center at 1:30pm.

The commencement speaker will be Manu Virtamo, who currently serves as the Consul General of Finland to New York.

Virtamo has been with the Foreign Service of Finland for the last 36 years, holding more than a dozen positions during that time.

This year’s student representative is Matt McLaughlin of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

McLaughlin is graduating summa cum laude after maintaining a 3.99 grade point average, while earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology.

He was also a four-year athlete with the Finlandia Lions hockey team.

In addition to graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army after spending four years in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

He plans to stay active with the army as a Medical Service Officer and continue his path toward medical school.

Sunday’s ceremony will be preceded by the baccalaureate service at the Chapel of St. Matthew at 10am and the graduation lunch at 11am.
