Finlandia Adopts New Learning Management System

Finlandia University has adopted a new online learning system for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.  The learning management platform Canvas is expected to help streamline the learning and grading process.

“The new Canvas classrooms will provide students with the technology that is needed for learning to come alive, no matter what modality students and faculty are teaching or learning from – ground or online,” said Michelle Rauch, Director of Innovative and Online Learning at FinnU. “As for faculty, they will have all they need to teach in one place, which allows them to reduce time on the learning platform but have more time to teach their content.”

Canvas has been widely adopted in the higher education realm and will allow FinnU students to learn when, where and how it fits their lifestyle.  For example, students can record a video response to an assignment on their smartphone then submit it directly on the app from their phone as well.

Rauch also pointed out that students gain the same quality outcomes learning online that a traditional student secures. Another advantage for students comes from potentially faster grading times as Canvas offers a unique way for instructors to provide feedback on submissions.

“Faculty are given the ability to provide written and video/audio comments directly in the document for students to understand what redirection is being shared,” said Rauch. “As such, faculty can free up more time for teaching and students can produce stronger submissions for the next assignment. It’s a win-win.”

With over 4,000 institutional customers in K-12 and higher education, Canvas is one of the world’s premier learning management systems. Owned by Instructure which was founded in 2008, the Canvas Learning Platform is rooted in the science of learning to help every student and teacher save time, increase achievement and find success.
