A new documentary film by an Upper Peninsula resident shows the plight of those who are about to lose their home away from homes.
Bruce Crossing’s Kristin Ojaniemi is one of those people.
Her family camp is one of roughly 100 camps in the Ottawa National Forest that must be removed or destroyed after the end of the year.
The camp locations were leased through UPPCO until the land was sold to the U.S Forest Service.
Ojaniemi says she was told the reason for the mass eviction was to provide access to the area to the general public.
She says lease holders are not being given any compensation for the loss of their camps.
Ojaniemi produced a full-length documentary feature to bring awareness to this issue.
“Up a River” will be shown at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock Thursday at 2pm and 6pm.
