FEMA & FHA Visit With Local Leaders About Flood Recovery

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are in town to meet with local leaders.

Representatives from the Federal Highway Administration were in the area Wednesday to discuss what financial help they can offer with road repair.

While the FHA is able to cover 80 percent of the costs of the projects, funding may not be available until February or March of next year, meaning local municipalities may have to secure financing to cover the millions of dollars in repair costs until then.

This money is in addition to the 20 percent match that local governments must already pay for FHA funds.

There is a match also required for FEMA funds of 25 percent with the state potentially covering half of that amount and pending a request that the state cover the entire match.

FEMA has approved Federal Disaster funding for Houghton, Gogebic, and Menominee Counties for local road and infrastructure repairs but determined the damage done by the June flood did not meet the threshold for personal property damage to receive individual assistance.
