Feeding America Is Out, but Today’s Food Distribution Is On

Today’s mobile food bank distribution in Houghton will take place as scheduled, even though Feeding America West Michigan will no longer be involved.

What’s happened is not clear.

Keweenaw Report received a fax from the Community Action Agency yesterday that said, “Feeding America will no longer be bringing their mobile pantry to the Baraga-Houghton & Keweenaw [sic] area that was previously advertised for October – December. The Community Action Agency will have a pantry on the scheduled dates in October only.”

Today’s distribution will begin at 2:00, and include supplies for around 300 families, as planned. Next Thursday’s event at Meadowbrook Arena will apparently also take place. There was no mention of the distribution scheduled for Ontonagon on October 29th.

All of the planned events in the area have been removed from Feeding America West Michigan’s website.

The Portage Health Foundation, which had been underwriting the monthly distributions in Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties, will no longer be a sponsor.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the situation.
