Fatal Marquette Crash Blamed on Drunk Driver

Officials believe a drunk driver was responsible for a traffic crash in Marquette County that killed one man, and severely injured a child.

The crash occurred on M-553, just south of Marquette Mountain, around 5:30 Friday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation by the Michigan State Police indicates a southbound vehicle driven by a 21-year-old Marquette woman lost control, and collided with a northbound vehicle driven by a 41-year-old Marquette man.

A 25-year-old Marquette man was thrown from the southbound vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. A four-year-old child in the southbound vehicle was airlifted to a hospital downstate for treatment of serious injuries. A 28-year-old Marquette man in the southbound vehicle was treated for injuries at UP Health System-Marquette.

The driver and passengers in the northbound vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

The woman driving the southbound car was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Additional charges are likely, as the investigation continues.
