Fatal Crash In Baraga County – Updated with Victims’ Names

A L’Anse woman died this morning in a crash on US-41 near the head of Keweenaw Bay. The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department says 59-year-old JoAnne Hilsendager crossed the centerline, and collided with a northbound semi driven by 57-year-old Brian Williams of Baraga. The force of the crash drove Hilsendager’s vehicle into the Red Rocks cliff below the Bishop Baraga Shrine. Williams was not hurt. A pick-up truck driven by 75-year-old Paul Kaurala of Pelkie wound up in the ditch as he tried to avoid the crash. A passenger in that vehicle, 82-year-old Delores Perala of Pelkie, was taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The highway was closed from 8:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon, as the wreckage was removed, the crash was investigated, and 140 gallons of spilled fuel was cleaned up.
