Expansions Coming for Swedetown, Keweenaw Bay Path

The Swedetown Recreation Area will be expanding.

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund board is sending $66,000 to purchase two parcels.

One is 20 acres. It’s wooded, and will be used for trail expansion. The other is 10 acres, and will be used for parking, and as a spectator area for major events.

The board has also allocated $300,000 to help extend the Keweenaw Bay Non-Motorized Pathway.

The first portion of the waterfront path north of the Baraga Marina was put in place this past summer. The next section will extend the trail south to Baraga State Park, and will include a stretch of boardwalk overlooking Keweenaw Bay.

The Pathway will eventually stretch around the bay, through L’Anse, to Zeba.

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports land conservation and outdoor recreation with money earned from the development of publicly owned minerals such as oil and natural gas.
