Canadian Oil Company Enbridge’s application to build a new pipeline to carry crude oil under the Straits of Mackinac, has been put on hold.
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, rejected the application, saying it was incomplete.
The department is also requiring that documentation on the proposed pipeline, be readily available to the public.
Enbridge was also asked to remove unnecessary information from the application, and focus more on specifics, in a letter to Enbridge from Joseph Haas, a district supervisor with EGLE’s Water Resources Division.
Ryan Duffy, spokesman for Enbridge, said they plan to provide the information EGLE has requested, and move on with the process.
Barring further delays, Enbridge hopes to begin construction on the replacement for Line 5 in 2021, and have it operational in 2024.
*UPDATE* We incorrectly reported Enbridges application was rejected.
This is not the case.
It was sent back to them, as more information was requested by EGLE.
Nick Assenfeldt, spokesman for EGLE, explained the application process.
Enbridge will add the information requested, and resubmit the application to EGLE, in the coming weeks.
We apologize for the incorrect story.
