The Michigan DNR is reporting the Buffalo Reef Task Force is asking residents who own shoreline property, to help in reporting flooding and ice shove activity along Grand Traverse Bay.
Copper Mine tailings from the since closed Mohawk and Wolverine mines, were deposited at a milling site along Lake Superior, for over 100 years.
Over that time, the tailings, referred to as “stamp sands” have wreaked havoc on beaches and white fish and lake trout populations in Lake Superior’s Buffalo Reef.
Various dredging efforts have taken place, to combat threats made to the reef, but there is still work to be done.
The Task Force continues to work on long term solutions that protect the juvenile whitefish population, while allowing recreation in the area.
Property owners are being asked to fill out a brief reporting form, and to send pictures, along with dates and times, of flooding and ice shove activity.
The area known as “The Trough”, directly North of the Reef, will be dredged this Spring.
The link to the reporting form is available here.
