Effort Underway To Save Hancock-Lake Linden Trail

Serious storm damage has the future of at least one popular trail in jeopardy.

Several trails managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources were severely damaged by flash floods last month, but officials are concerned that a stretch of trail between Dollar Bay and Lake Linden may be too expensive to repair.

Known as the Hancock-Lake Linden trail, it was the subject of vast washouts and requires extensive repairs.

Overall, the DNR trail system sustained an estimated $20 million in damages.

Discussions are underway on whether to repair or relocate the Hancock-Lake Linden trail, while some fear that the cost may prove to be too high.

An effort is underway to make sure the trail is not abandoned by calling for letters expressing the importance of the trail to the local economy and quality of life.

The Portage Health Foundation is working with the DNR and local motorized and non-motorized groups on ways to support the effort.

Letters can be emailed to info@phfgive.org.  More information can be found by clicking here.
