Eagle East Mine Development Continues

Lundin Mining continues to ramp up production at the Eagle East development at its Eagle Mine in Marquette County.

At a community update yesterday at the Mt. Shasta Restaurant in Michigamme, Eagle Mine External Affairs Director Matt Johnson said exploration continues within the Eagle East area. Discoveries there recently prompted the company to extend the projected life of the mine to 2025.

All other explorations in the region have been discontinued, however, including some testing that had been initiated in the Sidnaw area.

Two representations of the Eagle Mine. The top image shows the surface operation in the middle, with the underground location of the original mine to the left, and Eagle East deposit to the left. The lower image is a vertical representation, showing that Eagle East is much deeper than the original mine area.

Enhanced water treatment capacity has been brought online at the Humboldt processing mill.

Tailings are being dumped into the water-filled pit created by the former Cliffs iron mine on the site. The former Ropes Gold Mine also deposited its tailings in the pit during the 1980s.

Johnson said they started by treating the water on top. Now, they’re going deeper…

The Superior Watershed Partnership and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community continue to provide independent monitoring of groundwater at the mine, the mill, and along transportation routes. SWP confirms that no groundwater quality violations have occurred. You can review their tests here.

422 employees are currently involved at the mine. 199 of those work for Lundin, and the rest work for contractors who perform the actual mining, transport, and other operational functions. 81 percent of the workers were U.P. residents when they were hired.
