Two people are hospitalized after another driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The accident happened Monday just after 11am in front of the Hubbell Fire Department. Deputies from the Houghton Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the accident involving two cars with entrapment.
Authorities say a 19-year-old man was driving north on M-26 when he fell asleep, lost control, and crossed the center line into southbound traffic.
His vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle driven by an 82-year-old woman with her 85-year-old husband also in the vehicle.
Both elderly persons sustained incapacitating injuries and were taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital for treatment by Mercy Ambulance. Their conditions were not reported.
The condition of the 19-year-old driver was not reported.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lake Linden Police Department, Stanton Township First Responders, Mercy Ambulance, Hubbell Fire Department, Patriot Towing, and Superior Service.
