Motorists in downtown Houghton should start to see some progress on road work by early next week.
That’s the word from City Manager Eric Waara, who gave an update to the city council at their regular meeting Wednesday.
Waara said the weather this summer has slowed some of the work down but he expects the east end of Lakeshore Drive and Isle Royale Street to be open as early as Monday.
The next phase would then begin, which would involve the closing of Huron Street.
Catch basins are being replaced at Razorback and Sharon Avenue with milling and repaving work to be done on Razorback this week, as well as paving work on Ridge Road.
Waara said, weather permitting, those roads would also be reopened to normal traffic on Monday.
Because of the continuing roadwork along Lakeshore Drive, the city will move the Downtown Houghton Farmers Market from its current location next to the Portage Lake District Library to the parking deck across from the former Wells Fargo bank.
The location change is expected to last four to five weeks.
