Dollar Bay’s Minettes and a Miner Repeat As Smackdown Champions

So they missed a question this year, but the Minettes and a Miner outlasted nine other teams to repeat as champions of the 16th annual High School Local History Smackdown Thursday night at the Calumet Theatre.

(L-R) Korey Ericson, Hayley Mattfolk, Bobbi Jo Caskey, Kayla Hakala, and Coach Cathy Hill Smackdown winners from Dollar Bay.

Four Dollar Bay Seniors took on teams from Baraga, Calumet, Chassell, and Ontonagon; answering questions concerning local historical personalities, towns, nationalities, and of course the mining industry.

Three of the four were winners in last year’s competition.

This year the championship went 13 rounds, with the Nonesuch Know-It-Alls from Ontonagon placing second and Dollar Bay’s “The Rockers” placing third.

The winning squad’s names will again be placed on the traveling trophy and they will split $1000 in scholarship funds.

Winners at the end of the night, the Dollar Bay squad started the day early in Cedarville, near St. Ignace, winning a Superior ranking with their high school band in the state band festival, before travelling over five hours to make it to the Smackdown.
