The DNR’s Western Upper Peninsula Citizens’ Advisory Council will meet in Houghton Tuesday, July 17, exactly one month since flash flooding devastated many places in and around the Houghton-Hancock area, including state-managed trails and boating access sites.
Among its agenda items, the council will get an update from DNR Parks and Recreation Division staff on the latest work to repair the damage and re-open trails and boat launches.
The meeting will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. EDT (4:30-7 p.m. CDT) in the Memorial Union Building at Michigan Technological University.
Other new business to be discussed includes a DNR law enforcement staffing update for the western U.P. Committee reports will be offered.
Updates will also be provided on establishing a DNR shooting range in Marquette County, improvements made to the boating access site at Oman Creek in Gogebic County, chronic wasting disease, the U.P. Habitat Workgroup and a DNR deer movement study.
The DNR’s eastern and western Upper Peninsula citizens’ advisory councils are designed to provide local input to advise the DNR on regional programs and policies, identify areas in which the department can be more effective and responsive and offer insight and guidance from members’ own experiences and constituencies.
The council members represent a wide variety of natural resource and recreation interests. Agenda items are set by the council members and council recommendations are forwarded to the DNR for consideration.
