With all this snow that the Keweenaw has to offer, it’s easy to see why this is such a popular spot for snowmobiling, but the Department of Natural Resources is reminding riders to check its website for updated trail closures before riding.
DNR Public Information Officer John Pepin said, “In the Keweenaw peninsula, we have some trail sections that are closed. One is temporarily closed and two are closed for the season because of active logging operations that are going on there.”
Near the town of Gay, Trails# 124 and 133 are closed until next year.
The town remains accessible to snowmobiles through Trail# 122.
Trail# 132 from Delaware to Lac La Belle is also closed with no reroute available, but officials say it is scheduled to reopen within the next month.
Pepin says that so far this season is off to a great start.
“This winter so far with the cold temperatures, it hasn’t deterred snowmobiling at all. In a lot of areas we’ve had good snow and there have been a great number of snowmobilers in the area so it’s a good time for riding and it’s a good time for folks to come out and enjoy the Upper Peninsula’s winter,” said Pepin.
