A program that allowed expanded catches of brook trout in 31 Upper Peninsula streams has ended.
Yesterday, the Department of Natural Resources Commission voted to stop the experimental regulation, effective immediately. The daily limit, which had been set at 10 fish, will reset to the five fish limit in effect on other streams and rivers.
In our region, affected waterways include…
– In Houghton County: Deer Creek, the East branch of the Ontonagon River, the Sante River, and Sidnaw Creek;
– In Baraga County: the Falls River, the West Branch of the Huron River, the East Branch of the Fence River, the Silver River, Sidnaw Creek, and the Sturgeon River;
– In Ontonagon County: the Big Iron River, Bluff Creek, and the West Branch of the Firesteel River;
– In Keweenaw County: the Tobacco River.
The original experimental limit had expired October 1st. In November, the Commission had voted to extend it, but then changed the decision yesterday.
The 2020 season on Type One trout streams will open April 25th.
