Delta County Gets USDA Grant For New Jail

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investing $17.9 million in Delta County for a new jail, sheriff’s office and mental health facility.

That announcement comes from Congressman Jack Bergman, who says he met with constituents in Escanaba this week.

“Investing federal dollars back into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula remains a constant priority for me. I’m pleased to announce the USDA investment in the long overdue upgrade of the Delta County Sheriffs Office, inmate housing facility, and public building,” said Bergman.

The Rural Development funds will be used for construction of the new jail, which will also be used to house a new sheriff’s office and public building.

In addition, the facility will have expansion capabilities on the south side for an additional mental health location or housing.
