Defund or Defend the Police?
That was the question, and after Houghton County showed up in force, the answer was clear.
Approximately 300 people, young, old, in between and even dogs, showed up, to show support for our police and the work they do for the community.
The event was organized by local construction worker, Keith Sever and his wife Kylie, in response to calls to defund the police after riots broke out across the country, after two black suspects died after altercations with police in Minneapolis and Atlanta.
Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly.
Diamond House International was there, selling t-shirts, masks and stickers and Hubbell’s VFW was also there, passing out American flags.
When asked to comment on the march, Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean said this.
While talking to people, the recurring theme in almost all the conversations, was that respect for all lives, was key to moving forward in society.
Once the march was over, organizer Keith Sever shared thoughts with Keweenaw Report.
Sever also stated that plans for another march in support of the police were underway.
Look for that sometime in September.
