Houghton County is fast-tracking the appointment of a replacement for late Second District Commissioner Albert Koskela.
New county board Chair Tom Tikkanen says anyone who resides in the district can apply online…
You can access the application here.
A letter of interest stating why you’d like the job, and why you think you’re qualified, should also be submitted. You can also apply in person at the County Clerk’s office.
Applications are due by Monday, and the remaining four commissioners will make a decision at their meeting Tuesday. State law requires that the seat be filled within 30 days of becoming vacant.
Tikkanen admits that it’s an awkward process…
Whoever is chosen will fill the seat through the end of the year.
Koskela had not filed for reelection. Four candidates are competing for the Republican nomination in the August primary. No Democrats have filed. Depending on who applies, Tikkanen says one of the four Republican candidates could be chosen to complete the term, or the job could go to someone else…
If it does go to someone else, that person could still run for election to the full term in November, but only as an independent.
The second district includes Franklin, Osceola, Schoolcraft and Torch Lake Townships.
