The following press release was issued by Michigan Tech’s Mark Wilcox of Tech Today:
More than 200 local ninth-grade students will engage in hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities during a new event called A Day of STEM in the Copper Country.
The event will be held Tuesday in the Wood Gym at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex. The students will participate in hands-on activities, compete in engineering challenges and meet with college students and other representatives from a wide variety of Michigan Tech Departments.
The day will be packed full of both quick engineering challenges such as making card towers to more difficult challenges like creating a pinball machine. “We are so excited to provide this new event to our local students,” said Lauren Kirwin, a coordinator at Michigan Tech’s Center for Pre-College Outreach (CPCO). “The whole point of this event is to engage students in fun, hands-on STEM challenges to spark their interest. There are so many different types of STEM careers that students just don’t know about and we want to show them what is out there.”
The Department Expo will host tables from majors such as Biomedical Engineering to Supply Chain and Operations Management to Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology. Students will have the chance to ask questions about careers associated with these majors and ask college students about the college experience.
A Day of STEM in the Copper Country is hosted by the CPCO and is funded by Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) through the Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
