Two wolves remain on Isle Royale.
The count was confirmed on the second flight of the year on January 20th by those conducting the Wolves and Moose on Isle Royale study project, based out of Michigan Tech.
There had been previous reports that the population was down to a single wolf last year.
Researchers say they followed the tracks of the two wolves, a 9-year-old male and 7-year-old female, for over 30 miles at the east end of the island, where the pair has spent most of their time for many years.
The population has not had the opportunity to grow this year since there has not been an ice bridge to the mainland formed yet this winter.
