The latest COVID-19 wave shows preliminary signs of fading.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services figures showed 69 new confirmed cases in Houghton, Baraga, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties in the past week. That’s down a bit from the 82 cases confirmed in the previous week. Forty-four were in Houghton County, compared to 57 the previous week.
Statewide, the seven-day average of confirmed cases fell from nearly 3,700 per day to just under 3,100. Deaths related to the virus rose, however, averaging 17 per day, compared to nine the previous week.
Officials continue to caution that the number of actual COVID-19 cases is probably significantly higher. Most positive at-home tests are not reported. Many mild cases are not diagnosed, although those with few symptoms can still pass the virus on to others.
