County To Move Ahead With Jail Addition

Plans to build an addition to the Houghton County Jail are moving forward as is.

The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country presented the feedback they received from the community during three public forums and from their online survey regarding the jail.

The League contends there needs to be more time allotted for public input before plans to build an addition to the jail are finalized.

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners say they have considered several options and the addition best fits the needs of the county–one they feel may get approval from voters.

The board expects to finalize the plan in the next few weeks so the ballot language can be approved before the July deadline.

Afterward, the county will hold public meetings to explain the proposal to voters.
