Due to a huge spike in COVID-19 cases in Michigan, the County Courthouses for Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, have implemented more temporary safety measures, aimed at slowing the spread of the disease.
Effective immediately, the Baraga County Courthouse in L’Anse, Houghton County Courthouse in Houghton and the Keweenaw County Courthouse in Eagle River, will now have no more than 10 people, including staff.
The courts are now closed to the general public except for essential functions involving health and safety and Constitutional rights.
The Michigan Supreme Court issued the executive order, which highlights the essential functions, and the new order supersedes local administrative orders previously released.
Chief Judge of Michigan Timothy Brennan said “Courts statewide are taking this step in unison so that we may send a clear message to the public that we are taking every possible step to stop the virus, while continuing to provide essential services. Our team is adjusting as quickly as possible to the crisis, and we appreciate the support of the public as we work to put more business online in the coming days.”
