Copper Harbor Trails Club Eyeing Start Of Season

Although the tip of the Keweenaw is still under a thick blanket of snow, the Copper Harbor Trails Club is anxiously waiting to open up the 2018 mountain biking season.

“The trails are not open yet. We’ve had a lot of snow. It’s been a pretty cold spring so we all have our eyes on the snow pack level. Once that gets down, we’re going to clear out all of the deadfall from the winter and get things open as soon as possible,” said Ben Ciavola, President of the Cooper Harbor Trails Club, who says the organization is always open to volunteers to help with trail cleaning.

The club recently held its spring kick off event where it announced an administrative change.

Ciavola said, “So this year, we had some pretty big changes. We just hired a new executive director. We will be bringing on Nathan Miller as our new Executive Director of the Copper Harbor Trails Club.”

Miller is replacing former director Lori Hauswirth, who has moved out of the area.

Upcoming projects for this season include an addition to a Brockway Mountain Trail.

Ciavola said, “We have a lot of trail building that we’ll be doing. We’re building some new connector trails. We’re going to do a lot of maintenance. We just submitted a grant application for a huge trail project.”

If approved, that grant will go towards the completion of phase three of the Keweenaw Point Trail. Construction of that phase could begin as early as next year.
