Copper Country Youth Hockey Grants Awarded

Hancock–The Keweenaw Community Foundation is pleased to announce that ourCopper Country Youth Hockey Fund (CCYH) has awarded $2,801.85 to three area organizations.

Copper Country Junior Hockey Association (CCJHA) received funding  to help families with the cost of hockey registration for their children; Team Copper Country was received funding to support their hockey program for high school players; and Calumet Township received funding from both CCJHA and the CLK Youth Hockey Fund  toward the purchase of a handicap sled.

“Copper Country Youth Hockey has one mission and that’s to promote the sport of hockey here in the Copper Country. A lot of the funding goes to make sure no child who wants to play is left out due to financial issues. Hockey can be an expensive sport, so we help with buying equipment, registration fees, travel, referees…really anything that supports hockey for our youth,” said Brent Peterson,  board member of the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association.

With this most recent distribution of funds from CCYH, Keweenaw Community Foundation was able to contribute not only to CCJHA, but also to Team Copper Country—a team of elite high school players from all four area high schools—as well as aid Calumet Township in their efforts to build a handicapped hockey team with the purchase of specialty sleds for use by disabled players.

“Our Copper Country Youth Hockey Fund is a great example of how long-term investment in community non-profits is really beneficial. This fund was established at KCF in 2008, and as it grows through KCF’s investment strategies as well as contributions from individuals, so the investment in the community’s youth grows. Hockey is part of the fabric of the community here. It’s a tradition we’re really proud to be a part of,” said Jim Vivian, Executive Director of KCF.

Keweenaw Community Foundation manages funds in four different fields of interest:  arts, environment, recreation, and youth.
