Copper Country Firefighters Compete Saturday

Fire departments will compete for local supremacy Saturday.

The Houghton Fire Department will host the 68th Annual Copper Country Volunteer firefighters tournament.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara tells us competition will begin at noon on the grass at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park…

It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch. There’s a lot of friendly competition, some skills competition for these firefighters.

The public is welcome, and refreshments will be sold through the afternoon.

Waara says the fun event also helps build relationships between departments that often need to work together in emergency situations…

All of the firefighters, all of the chiefs, they see each other all the time. They meet. They talk about that thing they do, that most of us don’t really understand, but they do, and you’re glad they understand it when the time comes to use that training and that knowledge that they’re sharing with each other.

Rain will likely not interfere with Saturday’s games. If there’s a heavy thunderstorm with lightning, activities could be moved to Dee Stadium.

The parade lines up at Franklin Square at 6:00, and begins at 7:00. The route will proceed down Shelden Avenue, cut down to the waterfront near the Ambassador, and continue under the bridge on Lakeshore Drive.

The Firefighters Ball will follow the parade at Dee Stadium. Outlaw’d will provide the music. The public is welcome, at no charge.
