Yesterday’s stunningly hot weather broke high temperature marks across the region.
Records from the Houghton County Memorial Airport showed the thermometer topped out at 98 degrees between 5:55 and 6:30 yesterday afternoon. The previous high temperature record for June 20th was 85 degrees, set in 1995. The all-time record high temperature recorded at the airport was 102 degrees, reached on July 7th, 1988.
Private weather stations across the region reflected that trend. Skanee, Trout Creek, Bootjack and Pelkie reached 97 degrees. A station north of L’Anse recorded 102 degrees just after 6:00, and a station in Calumet topped out at 103. Even Copper Harbor hovered around 95 until 7:30 last evening, when a change in wind direction dropped the temperature nearly 30 degrees within an hour.
Today’s forecast provides minimal relief. Highs are predicted to reach 88 at Houghton and Hancock, and 96 along the M-28 corridor. If you’re looking for a cool spot, a brisk onshore wind is expected to keep temperatures in the 70s at McLain State Park, Eagle River, and in other areas along the windward side of the peninsula.
Today’s all-time record is 91, set in 1975.
More permanent relief will arrive as a cold front passes through tonight. Tomorrow’s predicted highs will be mostly in the 70s, with some 60s near the shore.
Officials continue to recommend caution. If you’re working outside, take breaks, find shade and drink water. Make sure outdoor pets have shade and fresh water. Check on relatives or friends who are elderly or have health issues, to make sure they’re all right.
