The Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) recently completed a draft of the updated Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties.
WUPPDR, as a condition of its designation and funding as a regional district of the United States Economic Development Administration, is responsible for creating a CEDS and updating it every five years. The document contains a regional inventory of information; analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; and goals, objectives, and strategies to accomplish a regional economic vision.
The vision for the region established by the Western U.P. Regional Prosperity Collaborative, which acts as the CEDS Committee, is as follows:
A stable, diversified economy fostered through investments in quality built and natural environments; affordable, accessible, and robust infrastructure; a productive and resourceful populace; and an open, progressive, collaborative mindset.
The CEDS draft can be reviewed online at http://www.wuppdr.org beginning Friday, March 17. Comments will be accepted until Sunday, April 16, allowing for consideration prior to adoption of the CEDS by the WUPPDR Commission. Any comments must be submitted in writing and should be e-mailed to jwuorenmaa@wuppdr.org or mailed to: WUPPDR, P.O. Box 365, Houghton, MI 49931.
