Community Builds 2,228 Snowmen In Record-Breaking Effort

It’s unofficially a world record!

Students from Michigan Tech’s Undergraduate Student Government rallied the community and other students to come together Saturday to try and break the Guinness World Record for the most snowmen built in one hour.

More than 1,500 people showed up to Sherman Field in Houghton and successfully set the record with 2,228 snowmen.

The previous record was 2,036 snowmen set in Japan.

The snowmen needed to be made of three separate balls of snow, balanced vertically and be at least three feet tall.

Each snowman had to have two eyes, a nose and two arms, with no other materials other than snow and no tools used to make them.

Participants had to battle dry, powdery snow and very cold temperatures but in the end, a small army of snowmen stood on the football field.

Guinness still needs to review the documentation of the attempt before it can be officially declared a world record.
