The biggest evening in Calumet hockey history is… history.
The Detroit Red Wings delighted a partisan crowd by earning a 4-1 victory over the Saint Louis Blues in the 2019 Kraft Hockeyville USA game.
The 106-year-old Colosseum was packed to capacity, and a large overflow group watched the game on a big screen television at Agassiz Field.
Visitors were impressed, including Red Wings color announcer and former Red Wing player Paul Woods…
Woods said he wasn’t the only person who had flashbacks to his early days of playing in small town rinks…
Woods, by the way, had his own adventure while driving to Calumet. His truck broke down in Chassell, and a Houghton County Sheriff’s Department cruiser was dispatched to get him to the Colosseum on time.
Now, the focus will turn to investing the money raised during the week.
Kraft provides $150,000 as the grand prize in the Hockeyville competition. Additional improvements were added by the NHL to prepare the rink for the game. The National Hockey League Players Association will kick in $10,000 for youth hockey equipment. And local organizers are still tallying up what promises to be a significant amount of money raised through local fundraisers, including merchandise sales and the Red and Blue gala Wednesday night.
