Cold Snap Causes Cancelled Flights At Houghton County Memorial Airport

The extreme winter weather is wreaking havoc on air travel throughout the Midwest and the Copper Country is no exception.

Houghton County Memorial Airport Manager Dennis Hext said all flights were cancelled today due to the conditions here and at other airports.  “We got hit kind of with a double whammy because when the weather was good, Chicago had a big snowstorm along with Detroit and the whole south down there, and that cancelled a bunch of flights for us a couple days ago and then, of course the weather we are getting now with the bitter cold and quarter mile visibility up here, flights have been cancelled for two days now,” said Hext.

Hext said the airport itself never closes but the airlines themselves make the call on a day to day basis whether to cancel a flight due to safety reasons, such as low visibility.

In the meantime, Hext said his crews will do their best to make sure your travel plans won’t be interrupted.  “Old Man Winter is keeping us down right now. There’s not much we can do about the visibility and the temperature and the ceilings and stuff but we will stay open and when the weather allows for flights to come in, we’ll get back to business again,” he said.

To find out if a flight has been cancelled or delayed, people can go to United.com for all flights from United Airlines, the air passenger carrier at the airport.
