Teaching children how to write is an endeavor of love, sweat, and tears. It’s an ongoing process of pulling out words and nudging students along to their point of breakthrough.
However, when students are given the opportunity to share their teacher’s own editing and revising process, the art of writing suddenly comes alive.
CLK Elementary School fourth grade teacher Deborah Pavolich has just published her first book, Last Chance for Outside, a futuristic young adult novella with an environmental theme.
“It explores the possibility of what could happen in the future if we don’t if we really don’t start addressing our human footprint, if we don’t really start believing that climate change is real and that what we do really does affect us and it’s going to affect the future generation,” said Pavolich.
Pavolich will lead a discussion on the topic “Learning to Write – Writing to Learn” at the Calumet Public Library on Wednesday.
She will discuss the trials and successes of bringing her story to print and although the book is intended for younger audiences, people of all ages can benefit from the discussion.
Pavolich said, “It’s addressing the publishing process and how I brought that into the classroom but just also how this came about and how I did end up getting it published.”
Copies of the book will be available for sale and the proceeds will support projects of the Friends of the Calumet Public Library. The event begins at 6:30pm.
