CLK Board OK’S COVID Plan Despite Parent Objections

The CLK Board of Education approved its COVID-19 plan last evening.

Like other districts’ plans, it includes in-person and online learning options. The passage came over the objections of a number of parents who wanted the district to require all staff and students to wear masks. Liz and William Leach’s son is at elevated risk…

“Please explain to us why you would approve a plan that would take away the opportunity for [our son] and students like him to come to his school, when it is a simple, proven solution.”

Dianne St. Amour is caretaker of her granddaughter, and is at elevated risk…

“I have worked through this whole pandemic, and worked hard to make sure I didn’t bring it home to her. And my greatest fear is that she’s going to go to school, and bring it home to me.”

Deb Pavolich…

“We need to be leaders, and show the community, and show our students, that we’re above politicizing something this important.”

Nicki Lahti is mom to a seventh-grader…

“She is going to wear a mask, she has made the choice. And, like most parents, I am fearful of her being bullied.”

Superintendent Chris Davidson said that masks can interfere with a productive learning and social environment. Enforcing a mask mandate would add another layer of responsibility on teachers and staff.

He acknowledged that not everyone will be comfortable with the policy, but explained that’s why the online option is available. Erina Stancher noted that not all families can take advantage of it…

“They don’t have a parent at home that can accommodate virtual learning.”

In the end, Leach was unconvinced…

“I love this district, but this is wrong.”

No parents spoke in favor of the mask-optional policy.

Masks are not required in areas of the state included in MI Safe Start Plan Phase Five, but are recommended as a best practice. If we were to drop back to Phase Four, masks would be required. Plans adopted by other local districts have also left mask-wearing optional.
