City Of Houghton Paves Way For New Meijer Store

The Houghton Zoning Board of Appeals met Wednesday to discuss a variance that would allow Meijer to provide 462 spaces in their parking lot, roughly 400 fewer than the city’s ordinance would require for a retail business of that size.

A representative from Meijer said the lower number is closer to what they typically need and they are also partially restricted by the topography of the area.

The board moved to allow the variance.

After their meeting, the Houghton City Council also met and approved a rezoning request for two parcels of land that are part of the new Meijer location.

The parcels were zoned as R-1 single family residential but the council approved a motion to rezone them as B-3 for general business.
