(Christmas) Party Like It’s 1849

Downtown Houghton will celebrate its annual Victorian-Inspired Christmas this Saturday.

Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department says the city hopes to build on the success of last year’s inaugural event.  “Last year was our first year and we felt it a huge success so we’re going to continue that on this year, make it bigger and better. It will be on December 15th and will be starting at the Carnegie Museum from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. You can go visit Santa Claus, make some gingerbread houses, they’ll have some live string music and a lot of fun there,” said Roberts.

Folks are then invited downtown from 4:00pm-7:00pm to enjoy hot beef sandwiches at the City Center and to visit the shops and restaurants during the festive celebration.  Roberts said, “We’ll have the Victorian people popping in and out of the stores, we’ll have like eight burn barrels down there for people to stay warm at, and then we’re going to have sleigh rides down at the Portage Lake Library. So, it you want to take a sleigh ride along the waterfront, we’ll be doing that. Then we’ll also have some candle dipping demonstrations at the Portage Lake Library also.”

The event culminates with the lighting of the downtown Christmas Tree at 6:30pm at Bridgeview Park.
