Child Porn Case Against Former Houghton Coach Remanded Back To 97th District Court

It appears that former Houghton High School coach and Athletic Director Don Sawaski will not be facing felony charges in a child porn case.

Sawaski was facing two counts of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material, both 4 year felonies; and one count of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, a 7 year felony.

He was arrested as a fugitive from justice in Colorado in January 2016.  Sawaski pled Not Guilty and was released on a $25,000 bond.

At a pretrial hearing in June 2016, Houghton County Prosecutor Michael Makinen indicated that he had provided the defense with a CD containing videos and photographs related to the case.

The prosecution also had a pediatrician review the materials.

A trial was set for November 2016, but was repeatedly postponed and was finally scheduled to begin on Monday, October 30th.

On Wednesday, his case was remanded back to 97th District Court.  His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Details of any plea agreements have not been released nor has any new charges for which Sawaski may be arraigned on.  District Court typically only decides misdemeanor cases.

This is a developing story.  We will bring you more information as it becomes available.
