This weekend’s Juhannus celebration will be taking place at multiple locations in the Copper Country, one of those being Toivola–which will be celebrating 125 years of its settlement this Saturday.
Festivities get underway at 1pm and last until 10pm at Agate Beach.
Several of the descendants of the first homesteaders will be in attendance.
A formal program begins at 1:30 with an original play written and performed by Kris Kyro called “Shores of Oar”.
There will be a group picture taken with the use of a drone, Frank Eld will give a lecture on log building preservation, food vendors and a visit from Finland’s Ambassador to New York, Kirsti Kauppi.
The traveling sauna will also be there along with music from local musicians, the group American Poijat and the Kivijat dancers will also perform.
The evening will end with the annual lighting of the Juhannus kokko by the Toivola Volunteer Fire Department.
This kokko or fire has been lit every year since early 1900’s.
