CCISD Students Take Tour Of Local Hospital

Health care provides a wide range of career opportunities for students.

Students from the Copper Country Intermediate School District toured U.P. Health System—Portage to get a behind-the-scenes look at working at a hospital.

Catherine Manderfield, RN, and Clinical Human Resources Coordinator for U.P. Health System—Portage, said, “So they were able to see some of the things that a nurses aid could do after they receive their certificate and go on to potentially be an LPN, an RN, Respiratory Therapist, one of the mid-level positions, such as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant, or even go on to med school.

The opportunity opened the eyes of the students to the possibilities.

Calumet High School Senior Shayla Cornish said, “I didn’t know what to expect but when I got in here, the atmosphere is definitely wonderful. The architectural structure is very pleasing and the staff are very nice.”

Touring a hospital wasn’t a new experience for everyone, especially for one student following in the family’s footsteps.

Hancock High School Senior Jacob Martin said, “My mom is an RN and I wanted to be a nurse. I still want to be a nurse. My dad’s a CNA. They been like pushing me through loops and getting me going to become a nurse.”
