Casperson Says New Security Measures Coming To Michigan Schools

In the wake of another school shooting, State Senator Tom Casperson says the Michigan legislature is taking steps to protect students.

Eight students and two teachers were killed Friday at Santa Fe High School in Texas. The alleged shooter was taken into custody after a 25-minute shootout with law enforcement.

Casperson says the state is looking into investing in school security to prevent a similar tragedy here in Michigan.  “I think everybody is starting to agree that at the very least that’s the first step. We’ve got all kinds of other problems. We’ve got the whole gun debate. That’ll keep raging on. You’ve got social issues that are going on. What’s going on with these kids that are getting to this point? That’s all stuff we need to continue to talk about but we’ve got to secure these schools,” Casperson said.

Steps that are being considered include narrowing down to one point of entry for schools and equipping them with metal detectors.  But Casperson says that doesn’t help when the students are not actually in the building.

“What about football games where you are at an athletic field where it’s wide open and there’s all kinds of access? That’s where I think we got to get serious about talking about what’s going on internally within our society. What’s turning these kids into something that would go do something like this?” he said.

Casperson says changes in school security could come as early as next fall.
