CareerFEST On Rails

The 3rd Annual Rail Day and Student Expo is Michigan Tech’s original Industry Day event and now part of CareerFEST.

A dozen companies converged on campus Friday to talk to students about the kinds of opportunities they offer in the rail industry.

MTU Rail Day, PettiboneMTU Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of Rail Transportation Program Pasi Lautala said, “There’s quite a variety of opportunities in the rail industry that really range from fairly tight management jobs, where you’re managing big crews and big programs, to highly technical jobs for some of the manufacturers and consultants, where you’re either designing infrastructure, designing equipment or actually doing some research activities, testing new technology to be implemented in the rail industry.”

One of those opportunities lies only about a half hour away in Baraga at Pettibone L.L.C., a heavy equipment manufacturer.

They are interested in the next generation of engineers.

Pettibone L.L.C. Project Engineer Tim Reeves said, “Just last summer, we had four to five interns. Two of them were in the design side, helping support new product development. Two of them were in the operation side. One was doing quality engineering and one was doing manufacturing engineering.”

The fall Career Fair is Tuesday where students can talk to reps from over 300 companies.
