Calumet Village Pursues Clean-Up

Momentum to clean up the Village of Calumet continues to build.

Last night, the village council approved an ad hoc committee to pursue the project. It will include members from the council, downtown development authority, the historic district commission, and Village Manager Amber Goodman. They’ll seek solutions for blight, crumbling sidewalks and neglected alleys.

The DDA will work with Koppers to set up an electronic waste recycling event, and hopes to establish an annual spring clean-up day.

Council members stressed that this will be a long-term project, and major decisions will be reviewed and voted on by the full council.

The council also approved the purchase of some new equipment for the fire department. Pasty Fest plans are in the works. The village has agreed to have the Michigan Department of Transportation repair some sections of Sixth Street next summer. And, the village has rejoined the Houghton County Recreation Authority, with Goodman attending meetings.
