The Calumet village council spent some time discussing the state of the town’s sidewalks at a work session last evening. Sidewalks are deteriorating throughout the village, and council members are concerned about both appearance and safety.
A village ordinance mandates that sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of the adjoining property owner. While councilors acknowledged the rising costs of making repairs, they also noted that the village crew is not large enough to tackle the problem.
Property owners cited for sidewalk problems have 15 days to effect repairs.
The village will continue to investigate ways to enforce the sidewalk ordinance fairly and effectively.
