Calumet Township Acquires Old Railroad Depot

Calumet Township is the new owner of the Calumet Railroad Depot building.

The depot on the corner of 9th and Oak Streets has been acquired by the township for the purpose of historical preservation.

The building will require extensive renovation but ownership by the township will open up opportunities for grants.

Calumet Township Supervisor Paul Lehto says the first priority is to secure the structure.

The township has applied for a $6,000 heritage grant from the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Committee to establish electricity and begin clean up of the building.

The future of the building is still unknown, though previous suggestions have included a bar or restaurant, a visitor center or a trailhead for the multi-use trails next to the depot.
