A book that features the Calumet Theatre has won a 2019 State History Award.
Once Upon a Time at the Opera House: Drama at Three Historic Michigan Theaters, 1882-1928 was written by James Berton Harris, and published by Michigan State University Press. It’s a lavishly illustrated look at three community theaters that flourished a century ago, and remain in use.
The other two theaters featured are the Coldwater Opera House and the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee.
Author Harris will collect one of 16 awards that will be handed out by the Historical Society of Michigan during the Michigan History Conference in Ludington later this month.
